Tips to Prevent Electrical Fires

More than 51,000 homes fall victim to electrical fires each year. Let’s look at some additional ways you can help keep your home safe.

We are continuing our series on preventing electrical fires in your home. As we mentioned in our previous article, more than 51,000 homes fall victim to electrical fires each year. Let’s look at some additional ways you can help keep your home safe:

Beware of Space Heaters

Space heaters are a leading cause of electrical fires. As a certified electrician, we recommend avoiding use all together. If you choose to use a space heater, only have it on when the room is occupied so it can be closely monitored.

Use GFCI Outlets

Outdoor outlets and areas of the home that have sinks or access to water should be on a ground fault circuit interrupter (GFCI) outlet. GFCI’s should be installed by a licensed electrician and are designed to cut the power if they detect any moisture. If an electrician is called out, they may recommend replacing older, traditional outlets with GFCI’s in certain areas of your home.

Schedule a Safety Inspection with a Certified Electrician

An electrician is often called when a homeowner notices a major problem. But, what if an issue goes unnoticed? An annual safety inspection by a licensed electrician can help identify existing hazards and potential problem areas before they become hazards.

Top Flight Electric is the preferred certified electrician serving Winter Haven, Lakeland, Eagle Lake and all of Polk County. We are also one of the area’s few authorized Generac dealers. Our licensed electrician is available to conduct an electrical inspection of your home, install GFCI outlets, and perform any other electrical work necessary to ensure your home is safe. Considering a home generator? Generac dealers are able to evaluate your needs and make a recommendation as to which unit will best serve you and your family.
