If you’ve recently purchased a new home, then congratulations! Whether you are a new homeowner or in the market to buy a home, there are some important electrical aspects to consider. Our residential electrician will discuss some of these in our next series of articles. Let’s get started:

Check Your Electrical Outlets

One of the first things you want to do when you purchase a home is check your electrical outlets.

You should start by making an inventory of all of your electrical outlets. Break these down by room and location. For instance, if you have four electrical outlets in your master bedroom, write down where each one is located (i.e., two on either side of the bed, one next to the closet and one next to the door, etc.) This will help you determine whether or not you have a sufficient number of outlets in each room or if you need more. Older homes may not be equipped with enough outlets to accommodate the large number of electronics we use today. If this is the case, then you will need to hire a licensed electrician to add more outlets in the areas where they are needed.

Next, you need to see if any of your outlets are faulty. You can do this yourself using a wiring fault reader or engage a residential electrician to do this for you. Either way, you should not plug anything into an outlet before you check it. A faulty outlet is usually not obvious to the naked eye but can be a shock hazard. It can also damage electronics or at worse, cause an electrical fire.

Our next article will cover more recommendations for new homeowners from our residential electrician.
