Do You Need a Panel Upgrade? 100A vs 200A, Honestly

'You need a panel upgrade' is both the most legitimate and the most oversold sentence in residential electrical work. Sometimes it's absolutely true. Sometimes a sub-panel or a single dedicated circuit solves the real problem for a fraction of the cost.

This guide gives you the framework we use on real evaluations, so you can pressure-test any quote — including ours.

01 · Definition

What a panel upgrade actually is (and isn't)

A service upgrade increases the total amperage your home can draw — typically 100 to 200 amps — and usually involves a new panel, new main breaker, new meter equipment, and utility coordination. A panel replacement swaps aging or unsafe equipment at the same amperage. A sub-panel adds breaker space and shortens wire runs without touching the service size. Quotes often blur these three; the price difference between them is large.

The honest driver is load calculation, not age. Modern code prescribes a method: square footage, fixed appliances, HVAC, and large loads like EV charging get added up with demand factors. If the calculated load fits comfortably within your existing service, capacity isn't your problem — even if the panel itself is old enough to need replacing for safety reasons.

The reverse is also true: a pristine 100-amp panel can be genuinely insufficient the day you buy an EV and a heat-pump water heater. Capacity and condition are two separate questions, and a good evaluation answers both explicitly.

02 · When to Use

When an upgrade is (and isn't) the right call

  • 01 Adding an EV charger, hot tub, pool equipment, or electric range to a 100-amp home → run the load calc first; roughly half the time the answer is a 200-amp upgrade, the other half it's load management or a dedicated circuit.
  • 02 Panel has no open slots but service size is fine → a sub-panel is often the better-value answer; be suspicious of quotes that only offer the full upgrade.
  • 03 Panel is a known-hazard legacy brand, shows heat damage, or fails inspection → replacement is a safety decision regardless of amperage.
  • 04 Planning a standby generator → the transfer-switch conversation and panel condition are linked; evaluate them together, not as two separate jobs.
  • 05 Selling within a couple of years → an upgrade rarely returns its cost at sale; fix safety items and let the buyer make capacity choices.
03 · Failure Modes

Where panel-upgrade decisions go wrong

  • Buying capacity you'll never use because a quote pattern-matched 'old house' to '200 amps' without a load calculation.
  • Under-scoping the other direction: upgrading the panel but reusing corroded service-entrance equipment that fails a year later.
  • Unpermitted upgrades — they surface at sale time, in insurance reviews, and in inspection reports, and re-permitting after the fact costs more than doing it right.
  • Ignoring the meter can and utility side; a clean new panel fed by 40-year-old service equipment is half a job.
  • Choosing the cheapest bid without surge protection, whole-home labeling, or AFCI/GFCI updates that current code requires when the panel changes.

Will an upgrade lower my electric bill? +

No — amperage is capacity, not efficiency. What it buys is headroom, safety, and the ability to add the loads you actually want. Anyone selling an upgrade as a bill-reducer is selling something else.

Can I add an EV charger without going to 200 amps? +

Often, yes. Load-management devices, lower-amperage charging, and careful load calcs frequently make a Level 2 charger work on 100-amp service. It's exactly the kind of question the load calculation answers definitively.
