GFCI vs AFCI: What Those Outlets Actually Do

The two life-safety devices modern code requires — what each one protects against, where Florida homes need them, and how to test yours in 30 seconds.

GFCI and AFCI protection are the two biggest life-safety advances in residential wiring, and most homeowners can't say what either does. The short version: GFCIs protect people from shock, AFCIs protect homes from fire.

If your home predates the 2000s, it almost certainly has fewer of both than modern code would require — this guide shows you exactly where they matter and how to check what you have.

01 · Definition

What are GFCI and AFCI protection?

A GFCI (ground-fault circuit interrupter) continuously compares current flowing out on the hot wire against current returning on the neutral. A mismatch of just a few milliamps means current is leaking somewhere it shouldn't — possibly through a person — and the device cuts power in a fraction of a second. That's why code puts GFCIs everywhere water and electricity meet: kitchens, bathrooms, garages, laundry, exteriors, and pool equipment.

An AFCI (arc-fault circuit interrupter) listens for the electrical signature of arcing — the sputtering, high-frequency chaos produced by damaged cords, loose terminations, or nails through cables. Ordinary breakers ignore arcs because arc current is often below the trip threshold; AFCIs recognize the waveform and open the circuit before the arc becomes ignition. Modern code requires AFCI protection on most living-area circuits.

Both come in outlet form and breaker form. A single GFCI outlet can protect everything downstream of it on the same circuit — which is why one dead bathroom outlet is often 'fixed' by a reset button in a different room entirely.

02 · When to Use

Where your home needs them (and how to check)

  • 01 Walk your kitchen, bathrooms, garage, laundry, and every exterior outlet: each should have TEST/RESET buttons or be fed from a GFCI breaker in the panel.
  • 02 Press TEST monthly — power should drop instantly; press RESET to restore. A GFCI that won't trip on TEST is a failed device and needs replacement.
  • 03 If an outlet is mysteriously dead, hunt for a tripped GFCI upstream (garages and bathrooms are the usual suspects) before assuming a wiring fault.
  • 04 In homes older than ~20 years, ask for a GFCI/AFCI coverage review as part of any electrical inspection — it's the highest-value safety upgrade per dollar in older housing stock.
  • 05 Any remodel or new circuit triggers current code requirements — a licensed electrician folds the required protection into the work automatically.
03 · Failure Modes

What goes wrong without them?

  • Ungrounded or unprotected outlets near water leave shock protection entirely to luck — the exact scenario GFCIs eliminated.
  • Arc faults from aged or damaged wiring can smolder inside walls with no breaker response, because arc current looks 'normal' to a standard breaker.
  • GFCIs that are never tested can fail silently and keep passing power — protection you think you have but don't.
  • Backyard-special wiring (backstabbed connections, bootleg grounds) can defeat protection while making outlets look properly wired to a cheap plug tester.
  • Florida humidity and outdoor exposure corrode unprotected exterior boxes faster than most homeowners expect.

Why does my GFCI keep tripping with nothing plugged in? +

Persistent tripping with no load usually means real leakage current downstream — moisture in an exterior box, a damaged underground run, or failing insulation. That's the device working correctly; the fix is finding the leak, not bypassing the GFCI.

Can I just replace a two-prong outlet with a three-prong one? +

Not directly — a three-prong outlet on an ungrounded circuit falsely advertises a ground that isn't there. Code does allow GFCI protection as a compliant path for ungrounded circuits (with a 'No Equipment Ground' label), which is one of several options an electrician can walk you through.

Are AFCI breakers worth retrofitting in an older home? +

Older homes are exactly where arc risk concentrates — aged insulation, decades of DIY, loose terminations. Retrofitting AFCI protection on bedroom and living-area circuits is one of the most effective fire-prevention upgrades available for the money.
