We are continuing our series of articles discussing some tasks you should perform when you purchase a home as recommended by our residential electrician. Our previous article covered the importance of checking all of your electrical outlets to make sure you know where they are and determine if they are all in proper working order. Today, we will discuss another suggestion from our licensed electrician.
Get to Know Your Electrical Control Panel/Breaker Box
The control panel/breaker box is a major component of the electrical system in your home. While they all have some of the same characteristics, each may differ slightly in their appearance and organization. So, if you were familiar with the breaker box in a previous home, you will still need to get to know your new one.
Begin with identifying where the main breaker is located. This turns the power for your entire home on and off. Next, look at what breakers are in the box and what areas/sections of the home they control. Make sure each is properly labeled. If you are unsure about what breaker is assigned where then contact a residential electrician who can go through your breakers and check and label each one. While they are at it, they can also conduct an electrical safety inspection of your home.
Next, it is important to know how to identify a tripped breaker. If you are unsure of what this looks like, be sure to ask your licensed electrician. Knowing your breaker box and how to control power in different parts of your home is extremely important, especially if you ever need to turn the power off for any reason or reset a tripped breaker.
