Electrical fires are no joke. They cause damage to thousands of home and office buildings each year. The sad fact is that most electrical fires can be avoided. Our next article will cover some electrical safety tips from our licensed electrician.
Don’t Use Damaged Cords
While it may be tempting to use a frayed cord for your mobile phone, any cord that is damaged can cause issues. You should discard these cords immediately. Damaged extension cords should also not be used. If the cord to an appliance is damaged, call a licensed electrician to examine it and offer a solution. When we conduct an electrical safety inspection of your home or office, we will be on the lookout for damaged cords.
Don’t Overload Your Outlets or Power Strips
This is another hazard we keep an eye out for when our residential electrician or commercial electrician conducts an electrical safety inspection. Plugging too many devices or appliances into a power strip can overload your circuit. You should also avoid using multiple adapters and/or extension cords in the same circuit. Major appliances such as washers, dryers, refrigerators, ovens, etc. should be plugged straight into the wall with no extension cords, power strips, or adapters. Only one heat-producing device (i.e., coffee machine, toaster, curling iron, hair dryer, etc.) should be plugged into a single outlet at a time.
