(part two)

We are continuing our series on different types of electrical emergencies. Our previous article covered power outages and electrical shock. Today, we will look at two more types of common electrical emergencies and what to do if they happened to you.

Fire Caused By Faulty or Exposed Wires

If you see a spark or flame in or around a faulty or exposed wire, turn off the breaker immediately. Once the power is off, a small flame may be put out using a fire extinguisher. However, don’t try to be a hero. If the flame gets out of control, make sure everyone – including pets – evacuates the home or building immediately then call 911. An electrical safety inspection performed by a residential electrician or commercial electrician can help identify potential fire hazards before they become a problem.

Power Lines Down

If you come across a downed power line, do not approach it. Downed power lines can emit electrical sparks so you should stay at least 50 feet away for your own safety. Do not touch anything that the power line is touching and stay away from metal and water. Call 911 immediately.

Some electrical issues can be prevented if detected early. This is why it is important to have an annual electrical safety inspection conducted by a residential electrician / commercial electrician. Top Flight Electric is happy to send a licensed electrician to your home or office to conduct your electrical safety inspection at a time that is convenient for you. If you are in need of a backup generator, we are also one of Polk County’s preferred Generac dealers. Give your friends at Top Flight Electric a call to learn more today!
